Acne is a wide spread skin disorder affecting 40-50 million Americans at any given time. While it is often associated with teenagers, the fact is that a growing number of women between the ages of 30 ad 50 are getting acne, and dermatologists can’t figure out why. We may not know why this condition is on the rise, we at NOSI Skincare know how to win the battle against acne. The cause is simple, dead skin cells clog pores, most of the time by an oily substance called sebum. An over-production of sebum causes dead skin cells to stick together instead of sloughing off the skin. Bacteria also gets trapped in clogged pores and grows, becoming red and swollen. If the bacteria grows deep into the skin, an acne nodule or cyst can form. Today’s blog, explores the cause of acne, the toll it takes and some tips to reduce the condition of acne.
Thank Your Mom & Dad
Over the years misconceptions over what causes acne have spread like wildfire. Foods high in fat and sugar have been said to cause breakouts. That’s not true. The only real cause is over-active sebaceous glands. And the cause of over-active sebaceous glands in genetic. Just like hair and eye color, skin type and oil production come from our parents. According to a study cited by Acne Einstein, “Sebum production in under genetic control.” One study looked at sebum production in 20 pairs of identical and 20 pairs of fraternal twins. Identical twins had almost identical sebum secretion rates while fraternal twins had different rates. Another study suggests that if you have a first-degree relative with acne, you are 4 times more likely of getting it than someone without a similar genetic link.
A Terrible Toll
Whether you or someone you know suffers with Adolescent, Hormonal, Adult, or Cystic Acne, the effects go far beyond white heads, pimples, dark spots, and scarring. There are emotional effects as well that can result in low self-esteem and reduce the quality of life in many ways. Anxiety and depression can damage relationships, causing feelings of isolation and loneliness. If left unchecked, depression can develop, sometimes with tragic results. It’s important to do everything you can to minimize the effects of acne especially for vulnerable teenagers who can be exposed to bullying at a stage in life so critical to their development. If your teenager is suffering with persistent acne, try the following tips to help minimize it. If these don’t clear it up, I recommend getting treatment from a dermatologist. Self-esteem, confidence, and a bright future are too important to risk.
Get Plenty of Sleep
There are several things you can do right now to minimize the effects of acne. I have written about the importance of getting 8-9 hours of quality sleep each night in many of my blogposts. When researching for this post, the subject of sleep came up again! According to Joshua Zeichner, a Dermatologist cited in Pibuu, ”When we sleep, cell division rates increase and the skin heals damage sustained during the day, while cortisol levels decrease. Disruptions in the sleep cycle may result in an increase in cortisol which can lead to skin inflammation, improper healing and conditions like acne and rosacea.” Try to go to bed at the same time, every night, ideally between 10 and 11pm and wake around the same time every morning, ideally between 6 and 8 am. Establishing and sticking to a consistent sleep cycle will help you to feel great and look your best.
The Right Diet
Diet is another way to win the battle of acne by controlling inflammation in the body. There are many anti-inflammatory foods readily available. Green tea is high in anti-oxidants. Fish and walnuts tame inflammation. Fruits and dark, leafy green vegetables are natural detoxifiers. Avoid dairy products, sugary foods, and white flour. Foods that contain high amounts of these ingredients cause inflammation. Another thing is to be mindful of your body and how it reacts to certain foods. This helps to identify foods that may adversely affect your complexion and eliminate them from your diet.
Of course, the best thing anyone can do to lessen the effects of acne is to follow a good skin care regimen. Keeping skin clean is essential. Makeup can clog pores to be sure to use only non-comedogenic products and be sure to remove it each night. Nothing will clog pores more than sleeping with makeup on. Make Your Own Facial Mask
I’m a big fan of facial masks and make many of them with ingredients found in my kitchen. Here is one to help reduce spots and the appearance of scarring.
Grind 1 tablespoon of oatmeal in a coffee or spice grinder. Add 1 tablespoon of organic plain yogurt and 1 teaspoon of honey. Gently work the mask across your face with the tips of your fingers in a circular pattern. Let it sit for 15 minutes and rinse it away with warm water.
This is a great mask because the ingredients dissolve dead skin cells, reduce inflammation and regulate the production of sebum.
