The summer travel season is just ahead and many of us will soon hop a flight or hit the road to destinations far and wide. Deciding what to take along can be a challenge, especially if you’re a spontaneous traveler and love to just wander. Others plan each day’s events well in advance which makes packing easier. Whatever your travel style, NOSI Skincare is here with tips to keep your skin looking great in any climate. If you’re planning a big trip this summer, like me, keep reading to look great on vacation using these skincare travel tips.
Facial Sprays and Essential Oils
Whether you’re traveling by air or by car, you’re probably going to face dry, recirculated air for a long period of time. This can wreak havoc on any complexion, regardless of how well you take care of your skin while at home. Make sure you pack a small travel bag that you can carry on a plane or take along in the car. Inside the bag, pack a facial mist, like rosewater. Spritz this over your face regularly to stay hydrated on your journey. Another thing to include is some essential oils like lavender to help keep you calm. Simply drop a little essential oil onto a scarf or pashmina, then use it around your neck to keep warm or position it as a pillow when you get sleepy. Frankincense is another essential oil that’s perfect for travel. Not only does it alleviate dry skin due to sunburn and windburn, but it also helps with headaches, stress, and help support the immune system. Who wants to get sick on vacation?
Be on Your Best Behavior
While you’re in flight or a long car ride, it’s best to avoid salty snacks. The salt will pull moisture from your skin, leaving it dry and tight. Along with salty snacks, skip caffeinated beverages like soda and coffee as well as cocktails, wine and beer. Beverages with caffeine and alcohol are diuretics and will have the same impact on your skin as salt. Smart snacking includes trail mix, dried fruit and cut raw vegetables like baby carrots and celery sticks. Get creative with the celery by stuffing them with peanut butter or herbed boursin cheese. These will keep you hydrated and feeling full. As for beverages, my go to will always be water, and plenty of it.
A Little Slice of Home
I’ve stayed at all kinds of hotels. From little bed and breakfast places to luxury resorts and one thing I have learned, they all wash their sheets and pillowcases in some sort of chemical detergent. They need the strength of the chemicals to sterilize the materials so they are safe for all guests. Unfortunately, those chemicals can irritate sensitive skin. That’s why I always pack my own pillowcase. It takes no room in my suitcase and one of the first things I do when I arrive at my hotel is to swap it out or just pull it over the hotel’s pillow, case and all! Another item I like to take along is witch hazel. It has potent anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties, which may be useful in treating a variety of conditions ranging from acne to scalp sensitivity. Best of all, it protects against sun damage and relieves skin irritation. Pack a small bottle in your travel bag. You may not need it, but if you do, you will be glad you did!
Vitamin C is the Secret Weapon!
No matter how tired you are when you finally get to your destination, never go to sleep without taking off your makeup first. I’ve talked about this before in my blog How to Look Radiant Throughout the Holiday Season. Removing your makeup before sleeping the night before is vitally important to looking your best the next day. An easy way to do this is with makeup remover pads. You can find them in soft-sided pouches that are totally packable. You don’t even need water! Once my skin is clean, I go for products rich in vitamin C. By now almost everyone who cares about good skin, fighting the effects of aging and looking their best (like most of my readers) has been told to wear sunscreen. Springtime is in bloom and the summer season is just around the corner, especially for those living in southern states. During the time of year where more exposure to the sun is common, it is especially important to understand how sunshine affects our skin, how to protect it, and avoid skin cancers while still enjoying the great outdoors. NOSI Skincare has all the tips you need to maintain youthful glowing skin. Here are five things to know about sun protection and skin cancer.
1. The Damage Caused by UV Rays
Ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun damage the DNA of skin cells. This can permanently alter the appearance of skin’s pigmentation and cause skin irregularities, wrinkles and sags. According to the American Cancer Society, there are three types of UV rays, UVA, UVB and UVC. While UVA rays are harmful and should be avoided, UVB rays are the most harmful. They are more energetic than UVA rays, cause more sunburns and can directly alter the DNA of skin cells. UVB rays are thought to cause most skin cancers. UVC rays do not penetrate into our atmosphere and are not sunlight, so they are not cause for concern at this time.
2. Skin Cancer and Early Warning Signs
According to the American Academy of Dermatology, 9,500 people are diagnosed with skin cancer each day! Skin cancer is by far the most common form of cancer. Melanoma accounts for only about 1% of skin cancers, but causes a large majority of skin cancer deaths. Melanoma is a cancer that starts in the cells that give the skin color. Therefore, it’s very important to pay attention to common moles on the skin. If the color of the mole spreads outside the borders of the mole, that could be early warning sign of trouble. If you see this, make an appointment with a dermatologist immediately. If ignored, melanoma can spread from the skin into organs of the body and cause death. I have friends that visit their dermatologist once a year to get checked, just as a precaution. We think this is a good idea. At NOSI Skincare we are all about precaution, prevention and protection!
3. Different Shades of Sun Screen
The best form of prevention and protection is to stay inside and avoid the sunshine. I once worked with a woman who rarely when out in the sun. She has exquisite skin and a nice shade of pale, but let’s face it, most of us spend time outdoors, at least some of the time. For people like us, there is sunscreen. Using sunscreen slows aging of the skin and prevents sunburn. But not all sunscreens are created equally. Most fall into two categories, physical blockers and chemical blockers. Physical blockers are made of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. These tend to be less irritating and block UV radiation across the UVA and UVB spectrum. This is knowns as the broad spectrum and you may see those words on the product packaging. While effective, many physical sunscreens can leave your skin with a white chalky appearance. Chemical blockers can have a narrow spectrum of UV coverage and carry a risk of contact allergy and irritation. These blockers, however, can be formulated to blend into skin better, giving a more natural appearance to the ones wearing it.
4. When to use Sunscreen. . .
Everyone should use sunscreen every day, period. Even when it’s cloudy. Even if you are going to be indoors all day. Even if you plan to wear a big hat or sit in the shade.
5. The SPF Mystery, Solved!
On every bottle or jar of sunscreen you will see something called an SPF with a number next to it. The SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor and the number indicates the degree of protection it offers. For example, an SPF of 15 means that it will take 15 times the UV exposure to cause a mild sunburn when compared to unprotected skin. The higher the number the greater the protection. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends sunscreens that are SPF 30, broad spectrum, and water resistant (holds effectiveness for 40 minutes). Apply it liberally over all exposed skin and since sunscreens are often not waterproof, it’s a good idea to reapply it every two hours and after swimming or sweating.

When I got my certification in oncology aesthetics, I knew I want to introduce my new services to clients and followers through a blog series. This is our fourth installment in the series and we continue to focus on ways to feel better during the fight against cancer. While doctors can treat the disease, an aesthetician specially trained to help those suffering with cancer can provide a focus on self-care that will make you feel better and boost your confidence. We’ve covered a lot of topics and provided a lot of tips in each blog. Today we cover tips from head to toe for cancer patients, starting with the head.
Facing the Truth. . .
We covered skincare extensively in the blog, “Skincare Services for Cancer Patients.” but we also need to address the effects some chemotherapy has on eyelashes. During treatments, eyelashes can thin dramatically. Thin eyelashes can benefit from a lash serum like my All Natural Grown Serum for Lashes and Brows. This serum nourishes and conditions lashes and brows but best of all, it stimulates new growth! This will help you look like yourself again. Skin around the eyes is sensitive and can be even more delicate during treatments, so make sure every product and applicator is soft and gentle. This will help you look your best and feel confident. I can also help you select gentle eye makeup cleansers that will remove the color without damaging your skin.
Jade Roller Treatment
One treatment safe for oncology patients is the cool and soothing turn of a Jade Roller. Apply a rolling motion to face, back, neck, hands, or feet to stimulate nerves, tighten skin can eliminate fine lines. Always apply gentle pressure and get approval from your physician before you start.
Wearing makeup is always a personal choice. Some people experience skin discoloration from radiation treatments and choose to use a tinted primer to even out skin tone and produce a natural look. Products with a matte finish are ideal for oily skin types while brightening or illuminating primers work best for dry or mature skin. Talc-free mineral make up can be used as a foundation. If you decide to use blush, a cream blusher is good when using a creamy foundation, especially if your skin is dry. A powder blush is better when using a matte foundation or if skin is oily.
Be sure there are no parabens or fillers in your products. Parabens are chemical preservatives and disrupt the naturally occurring hormone function. Parabens are just one chemical. Add that to the many chemicals in some brands of makeup used every day for years aren’t good for the skin. Many cosmetics contain chemicals which may be linked to cancer development. Check your labels and check safecosmetics.org. I can help selected the right make up for all types of skin that helps to achieve a desired look.
Happy Hands & Feet
Chemotherapy can affect the hands and feet. Hand-foot syndrome occurs following chemotherapy where smalls amount of drug leak out of very small blood vessels in the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. Exposing them to heat as well as friction will increase the amount of drug leakage which causes redness, tenderness, numbness and possibly peeling of the skin. Try and reduce friction and heat exposure for about one week after treatment. Avoid hot showers, increased pressure on the soles of the feet or palms of hands (no jogging, tasks where you are squeezing your hands on a hard surface). Use an ice pack on the bottom of your feet alternating on and off for about 15 minutes at a time.
Turning Nails from Brittle to Strong. . .
Nails can turn brittle and the following suggestions may make your nails look and feel better. Clip nails short, massage cuticle cream into your nails and cuticles, wear gloves to do chores like washing dishes. If you do have a manicure, be sure to bring your own tools and avoid harsh nail polish. Some oils that can be used are rose oil as it’s skin nurturing. Lemon essential oil is antibacterial and anti-inflammatory and myrrh has been used for thousands of years for its healing properties.

One of the best ways to successfully fight cancer is staying mentally strong and emotionally positive. This can be easier said than done. Fear, guilt, self-pity and resentment can envelop anyone in a cocoon of negativity that will only make the situation worse. These thoughts can paralyze constructive activity that will set you on the path to feeling your best positive about your treatment. I can tell you from personal experience, facing a lot of challenges in life, the path forward always starts with a positive attitude and determination. But how do you feel positive when you are sick, and in some cases, unable to do the very things that have defined your life? It’s tough but not impossible. Being mentally and emotionally strong can determine how the body responds to medical treatment so focus on things that make you feel healthier, normal and happy. 1. A Gentle Massage. . .
Gentle massage is tolerated by most people with cancer. During cancer treatment, it is said that massage promotes improvement in sleep, mental clarity, and alertness. Massage can also improve range of motion that makes patients feel like their old-selves again. This can have a tremendously positive impact on their emotional frame of mind. Massage helps a person relax, feel more positive, and may reduce pain fatigue, nausea, anxiety and depression. As always, make sure to talk to your doctors about any type of massage before getting one. After the all-clear from your doctor, find a licensed massage therapist who has taken a specialty oncology massage training course. You’ll be glad you did.
2. Shiatsu to Release Energy Flow. . .
Another way to feel better is by getting a Shiatsu treatment. Shiatsu is a Japanese term for finger pressure and the treatment uses varied, rhythmic pressure on precise points on the body known as acupressure points. This is believed to release the flow of energy and can help to lift your mood and improve well-being. It also helps to relax, cope with stress, anxiety, depression, pain and nausea.
3. Reduce Pain with Reflexology. . .
Reflexology is based on Chinese tradition and the idea that stimulating specific points on the feet can improve the functioning of corresponding organs, glands, and other parts of the body. It’s suggested that reflexology helps reduce pain, nausea, fatigue, diarrhea, and stimulate appetite in those with cancer.
4. Learn More about Essential Oils. . .

On the website naturallivingfamily.com, an article by Eric Zielinski, D.C., noted that in journal Molecules, a study was published in 2010 that evaluated how cancer cells could stand up against powerful essential oils, and thyme stood out from the crowd as the most beneficial against breast cancer, prostate, and lung carcinoma.

Pain reduction, decreased stress, improved energy, and mental health are said to be benefits. Women who are diagnosed with cancer approach treatment in a variety of ways. Many type-A women, who have spent their lives charging ahead and taking control, want to manage their treatment, defiant and determined to conquer it. Other women are more comfortable following the treatment protocols prescribed by their oncologist. Regardless of the approach, everyone is flooded with emotions from the moment of diagnosis through remission. Most women feel the need to care for those around them during these times. They want to protect loved ones from the reality of cancer treatment and the mental and physical effects it can have. Afterall, that’s what women do. We are the protectors and caregivers. We are the ones who take care of everyone around us before taking care of ourselves. We’ve done this for so long that it’s what we know. What most women don’t realize, is that during treatment, self-care is the best way to care for others. Never forget the importance of self-care when fighting cancer.
Take Care of Yourself First. . .
Elaine Gibson is a cancer survivor and I ran across a video she posted to YouTube. In it, she tells us how important it is to take care of yourself first. She says, “The only way to truly take care of the people I love, is by taking care of myself. It feels selfish but the greatest gift we can give to the people we love, is to get better.” Here is the video:
